Vikings
Sports Team Branding Project
Otis 2020
The Sports Team project was the final assignment for the Introduction to Graphic Design course.

Process
The requirements were to create a brand for a sports team that included a logo, color scheme, jersey and three examples of mockups.
I chose to brand a softball team because I played the sport as a kid for many years. I recall the years of packing a bag, checking my helmet, and grabbing a water bottle in preparation of a game. With my previous knowledge of the game and its equipment, I moved forward with developing a visual look.
I looked into popular mascots and team names and decided on the Vikings. From there, I researched popular shields vikings used throughout history as a basis for a team logo. I layered two crossing bats and a softball with a ribbon on top to complete the logo. Lastly, I added the name "Vikings" to the ribbon.
I chose the traditional colors of a deep red and navy blue as the Vikings' colors as an homage to the athletic teams I have played on in the past. The red is a deep hue that represents passion, energy and aggression. The deep blue represents power, authority, and reliability. Together, the pair of colors represent a powerful duo.
The primary logomark font, Qavo, was chosen because of its geometric nature with a sharp edge on its terminals and ascenders. I felt it was stylized but simple enough to be readable in the capacity the font would be used: in the logomark and in the team's numbers.
