Process

The rules were simple:

  1. Use the word "dragon" in the name of the wine label

  2. Label(s) must contain specific information including government disclaimer, bottle quantity (750 ml), and description of wine taste.

I began by brainstorming different cultures that used dragons, their mythology, and visual depictions. After seeing the initial proposals from some of my classmates, I wanted to diverge from the frequently-featured Asian-style dragon and chose to pursue a Welsh dragon as the basis for my wine label.

The concept behind the One Dragon wine label is that the maker's heritage is Welsh, but the wine is made in one of the United States' finest wine regions, northern California. My research led me to the understanding that wine made from the western regions of Europe like Scotland and Ireland are, in some words, "undrinkable" and can hardly be considered wine. Therefore, this fictional label wine would be made in California, The Golden State.

Fire of the Dragon Wineries incorporates the required word for the project and represents products made from

I altered a vectorized graphic of the welsh dragon, Y Ddraig Goch, used on the national flag of Wales. By reducing the image to just the dragon's head, neck, and claw, I made an icon that would read in both large and small scales.

The font family used is Perpetua Std. and was chosen to evoke a sophisticated, elegant vibe.

For the labels, I colorized and layered effects onto a single image of snake scales to make different sub-brands for each type of wine. Each label would be recognizably branded, but unique.

Each wine was named using a Scottish Gaelic word that referenced community and togetherness.
